[Also in Division D1] Water soluble alkali metal salts of interpolymers of ethylene and acrylic or methacrylic acid, said interpolymers having a melt index of 15 to 1000 decigrams per minute and containing 12 to 54 weight per cent of interpolymerized acid, and the acrylic acid alkali metal salt moieties comprising 12 to 65 weight per cent of the interpolymer salt may be used as textile sizes. Preferred salts are sodium, potassium and lithium salts of ethylene/acrylic acid and ethylene/methacrylic acid copolymers. The sizes may be applied from aqueous solution, and may be recovered by scouring the sized textile materials with hot water, precipitating the interpolymer by acidification and reconverting the interpolymer to salt form by reacting with an alkali metal base. |
