摘要 1,094,206. Fuel cell electrodes. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. Jan. 27, 1966 [Jan. 28, 1965], No. 3823/66. Heading H1B. A fuel cell fuel electrode 6 comprises a less than 1/4 inch thick (preferably 10 to 30 mils. thickness), porous non-carbon-supporting substrate 9 having bonded. to its surface and in its pores a mixture of a fluorocarbon polymer (e.g. polytefc-afluoroethylene) and, a carbon-supported platinum group metal (Pt, Ru, Pd; Ir, Os, Rh , the carbon having, a real surface area of from 5 to 250 m.<SP>2</SP>/gm. and a porosity of not more than 0À5 c.c./gm. The supporting substrate is a woven platinum or stainless steel screen or a porous P.V.C. or polytetrafluoroethylene sheet. Platinium gauze sheets 13, 14 contact the catalyst layers 11; 12 to act as current collectors from electrodes 6, 7. The catalyst may be 50% platinum or 35% platinum, 15% ruthenium, on carbon black particles, the catalyst being mixed with P.T.F.E. powder and pressed on to the substrate. Alternatively, the platinium metal alloy is supported on carbon char particles. The mixture may be sintered after brushing on to the porous substrate as an emulsion and drying. The substrate may also be of organic fibres, e.g. acrylonitrile or vinylidene chloride fibres, or of inorganic fibres, e.g. glass or asbestos fibres. Fuel is hydrogen, methanol, ethanol, propane, ethane or butane. Oxidant is air or oxygen. Electrolyte is free of free base, e.g. is sulphuric or phosphoric acid, or caesium carbonate, with carbonaceous fuel, or with hydrogen is KOH or NaOH. The fluorocarbon polymer particle-carbon supported-platinium group metal particle mixture can be applied to the porous supporting substrate by pressing.
