1,235,011. Boron-coated C fibre. UNITED AIRCRAFT CORP. Nov.3, 1969 [Jan.15, 1969], No. 53768/ 69. Heading C7F. A carbon filament is coated with amorphous boron by drawing it through a reactor, maintaining the filament hot enough for the deposition of B but at T < 1300‹C., and exposing it to a gaseous boron halide/hydrogen mixture for a residence time less than 5 seconds. Preferably the C filament has a diameter of ¢-2 mils, a circular cross-section, a resistance of 500-2500 ohms/inch, the B halide is BCl 3 and the coating temperature is 1100- 1300‹C. The coating is glassy, amorphous, and free from nodes of B which would give a bamboolike appearance. |
