PURPOSE: A method for controlling buffer of a digital video disk player is provided to use a buffer effectively by separating and managing a storing area into an area for storing consecutive data, an area for storing data having a high demand frequency, and an area for storing data in accordance with a forecasting a command being generated from a CPU. CONSTITUTION: When a command for reading data being stored in a DVD-ROM is received from a DVDP CPU, the position to be read in current is compared with a position to be read in performing the previous reproducing operation. In the case that the position to be read in current is identified with the position to be read in performing the previous reproducing operation and the mode was repeatedly processed, a repeating reproducing mode is performed. In the case that the position to be read in current is prior to the position to be read in performing the previous reproducing operation, the variation of the position is detected, and if the detected difference value is more than a predetermined value, a simple read mode is performed. At this time, if the detected difference value is less than the predetermined value, a reverse direction reproducing mode is performed. In the case that the position to be read in current is next to the position to be read in performing the previous reproducing operation, it is detected whether a portion read in performing the previous reproducing operation is consecutive. If a read of data with respect to a consecutive position is repeated more than a predetermined number, a consecutive reproducing mode is performed. If the read is not more than a predetermined number, the simple read mode is performed. If a portion read in performing the previous reproducing operation is not consecutive, the interval of the position intermittently read is detected. If the interval is similar thereto and the read is repeated more than a predetermined number, a high speed reproducing mode is performed. If the interval is distinctly different thereto and the read is not repeated more than a predetermined number, the simple read mode is performed.
