Provided are a water-swelling amphiphilic polymer, its preparation method, and a method for recovering a metal ion from a metal ion aqueous solution such as waste water by using the polymer. The water-swelling amphiphilic polymer has a repeating unit represented by the formula 1, wherein R1 is a low molecular weight alkyl group; and R2 is CH2COO-, CH(CH3)COO-, (CH2)4CHNH2COO- or CH2CH2O-. Preferably R1 is an ethyl group. Preferably the polymer is a linear polymer and has a number average molecular weight of 20,000-200,000. The preparation method comprises the steps of mixing an amphiphilic compound having both amino group and carboxyl group with acrylic acid; and reacting the mixture in the presence of a polymerization initiator.
