<p>1,207,875. Gas-filled lighters. S. H. NEWMAN. 15 July, 1968 [28 July, 1967], No. 33658/68. Heading F4F. In a non-refillable gas-fuelled smoker's lighter, having a flint wheel ignition apparatus at the top of casing 1, a support 2 carries a burner 9 and a flint 4 pushed by a spring 39 against a wheel 29, the lighter also comprising a pivoting operating lever 28 provided with two arms 28b, extensions of which form bearing cams 32, shaft 30 of wheel 29 being mounted in the cams 32, shaft 30 of wheel 29 being mounted in the cams 32, and support of wheel 29 being resilient and comprising two side plates 5a held between two cheeks 1a forming the top portion of two side faces of the casing 1 and having openings 33 in which bearing cams 32 move. Wheel 29 is keyed on a bush 31 through which shaft 30 passes and the wheel 29 carries a ratchet plate 34 engaging with a pawl plate 35 mounted for rotation on bush 31. Pawl plate 35 bears against a projection 36 on operating lever 28: hence plate 35 and consequently wheel 29 turn as lever 28 is pivoted. Burner 9 which is of known construction is provided with a spring-loaded valve-arrangement such that when operating lever 28 in pivoted arms 28b come into contact with a valve lever 22 which then lifts the burner 9, opens the valve-arrangement and allows the escape of gas. Flow of gas is adjusted by compression of a porous washer (15) (Fig. 6, not shown). In operation of the lighter, operating lever 28 is pivoted causing wheel 29 to turn and thus produce a series of sparks by rubbing against flint 4: at the same time arms 28b of lever 28 come into contact with valve lever 22 and turn it around a pivot 40 secured to the top face of support 2. Valve lever 22 then comes into contact with the head of burner tube 9 to allow the escape of gas as previously indicated.</p> |
