1,204,314. Fuelling reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 19 Sept., 1967 [21 Sept., 1966], No. 42249/66. Heading G6C. A sodium-cooled materials testing reactor comprises, within a vessel 1, a core 2 inside a reflector 3. A baffle wall 4 defines a space for pumps 5 which circulate coolant through the core and reflector and heat exchangers 6. The vessel 1 is closed by a shield 7, 8 having a fuelling duct 10 closed by a plug 11. The core 2 is supported on a platform 12 carried by one end of an arm 13 integral with a number 14 movable vertically and rotatively by a drive mechanism (not shown). A platform 15 at the other end of the arm 13 supports a replacement core 16. To refuel the reactor the member 14 is lowered to the chain-lime position to withdraw the core 2 from the reflector 3 and the arm 13 is rotated through 180 degrees, the member 14 then being raised to position the new core 16 within the reflector. The spent core 2 is removed in sections through the duct 10 and another replacement core is assembled in its place. The arm 13 is hollow and forms part of the coolant path from the. pumps to the cores 2, 16. |
