The emergency brake system for a railway locomotive has an actuating solenoid controlled by the travelling conditions. The solenoid controls as release valve for venting a compressed air brake system by opening a compressed a air line by an emergency valve. The actuating solenoid has permanent magnets. The compressed air pipeline has upstream or downstream of the releasing valve a blocking valve actuated by additional solenoids. In the readiness condition only the armature of the actuating solenoid for the releasing valve is energised with the circuit current. Only the armature of the actuating solenoid fails when the power source either fails or if it is switched off.
