Hydrated aluminium oxide is deposited on a carrier and then reacted, pref. at a temp. of up to 316 degrees C for 2 hours, with a composition which contains a source of silicon dioxide and alkali metal oxide to give crystalline aluminium silicate zeolite on an aluminium oxide support. The catalyst is suitable for hydrocarbon conversion processes e.g. the conversion of ethylene to ethane.
