A magnesium-alcohol compound having the general formula Mg(OA) 2 .(AOH) n , in which n is from 0 to 3, and A is an alkyl radical of from 1 to 3 carbon atoms, or a radical of the formula R 1 0R 2 in which R 1 is an alkylene radical, R 2 is an alkyl radical and R 1 and R 2 contain a total of 3 or 4 carbon atoms, is prepared by reacting metallic magnesium with excess alcohol AOH containing from 0.5 to 5% by weight, based upon the weight of alcohol, of one or more orthoformic acid esters, at a temperature of 20‹ to 140‹ C. at a pressure of from 200 Torr to 10 atmospheres. The mixture of alcohol and ester is formed before reaction with the magnesium by heating for from “ to 24 hours at 15‹ to 200‹ C.; p-toluene sulphonic acid may suitably be added to the alcohol before reaction with the magnesium. Examples describe the preparation of magnesium methylate and ethylate, and alcoholates of the formula Mg(0C 2 H 4 0C 2 H 5 ) 2 and Mg(OC 2 H 4 OC 2 H 5 ) 2 . (C 2 H 5 OC 2 H 4 OH) 3 . |
