1334376 Making cans; seaming CROWN CORK & SEAL CO Inc 25 Nov 1970 [20 Jan 1970] 55997/70 Headings B3J and B3A [Also in Division B8] Sheet metal cans are made by welding 28, Fig. 1, and soldering a side seam 16, reducing the diameter of one or both of the ends of the seamed body, and double-seaming a can-end 14 on one or both of the reduced ends. One or two spot or projection welds 28 secure overlapping portions 26 at the ends of an interlocked section 30 of the side seam. The seam is then sealed on a soldering roll, Fig. 9d (not shown), before the end of the body, supported on a mandrel 52, Fig. 9e, is reduced by a tool 54, revolved around the body. A collapsible mandrel 52 is used if both ends of the body are to be reduced. End-flanging and double-seaming follow to secure the can ends. |
