An ignition system comprises a voltage converter I, a storage capacitor C1 changeable by the converter, a switching thyristor 8 arranged to control discharge of the capacitor C to provide energy for an ignition pulse, a control inlet for connection to a mechanical breaker means 1 to apply a backward voltage between the gate electrode and the common electrode of the thyristor subject to control from the breaker inlet, a coil 10 having an unclosed iron core coupled to the breaker inlet such as to produce when breaker contacts connected across the inlet first open a desired triggering pulse of substantially higher voltage than required for triggering the thyristor and a voltage divider formed of the internal resistance of the thyristor between its gate electrode and common electrode and another resistance in series therewith. The voltage divider is arranged so that the desired triggering pulse and any spurious triggering pulse will be applied to the divider so that a substantial part of the energy of the desired and spurious pulses will be dissipated and ineffective for triggering. A modification is described comprising an individual ignition coil and breaker for each cylinder. |
