A roll group for processing plastic granular materials, comprising two or more rotatable rolls mounted at an adjustable spacing, is fitted with a device, such as a plate, mounted above the roll gap; the particulate material is heaped or pressed against this during its deformation. Specif. the device may be a horizontal plate, adjustable in height, mounted just above the tangent across the crest of the rolls. Its purpose, e.g. in a preheating or mixing roll group for rubber or plastics, is to prevent build-up of a large quantity of material failing to pass through the roll gap.
