A method of operating a fuel cell installation (2) which includes at least one fuel cell stack (4) whose waste gas is utilised as the operating resource for at least one heat engine e.g. specifically a Stirling motor. At least one fuel cell stack (4) is used and includes an anode- part (6) with at least one back-path (32,36) and a cathode part (8) with at least one back-path (40,42). At least one heat engine (34,38,44) is connected via the back-path (32,36) of the anode part and/or the back-path (40,42) of the cathode part (8) on to the fuel-cell stack (4).
