Cpds. of formula Ar-Z-Ar' (I) are useful for activating plastics materials (II), esp. for increasing water wettability and reducing surface resistance, for pretreating before dyeing with water-soluble dyes or before adhesive bonding or coating, for improving the filtration effect of (II) in filters, for (II) used as chromatographic materials, etc. In (I) Ar, Ar' = 5- or 6-membered aromatic ring system, with H atom(s) susbtd. by functional gps.; Z = CO, NH, CH2, CMe2, SO2, S, O or quat. ammonium. ADVANTAGE - The process provides a means of introducing functional gps. into (II) which is cheaper than prior-art plasma treatment or air furnace processes and is less likely to damage subsurface structures than pickling with strong acids.
