PURPOSE:To prevent the shock at the time of engagement in the same pressure-rising control pattern, by controlling clutch oil pressure automatically along a prescribed pattern in response to the operation of a changeover lever into a position such as ahead, neutral, astern, and trowling. CONSTITUTION:When the ahead or astern clutch 4, 6 of a marine reduction and reversing gear 2 is engaged by the operation of a changeover lever 79 for ahead/neutral/ astern/trawling, a control unit 81, first, maintains the clutch oil pressure at a slightly higher pressure P1 for a given minute time by controlling a proportional solenoid valve 73 and a changeover valve 75, and then lowers it quickly. Next, after the oil pressure has been gradually increased at an increasing rate proportional to the rotating speed of an main engine 1, it maintains the clutch oil pressure at a set pressure P2 proportional to the engine rotating speed, being slightly greater than the transmission torque at the time when the clutch has been directly coupled. Under the set pressure P2, the clutch is engaged, and after a prescribed time, the maximum pressure Pm is maintained to complete the engagement of the clutch. Thus, the engagement of the clutch can be carried out within a given time in the same pressure-rising pattern, and the shock at the time of engagement can be prevented.
