A food composition comprises leucine, isoleucine, valine, methionine, tryptophan, phenylalanine, threonine, arginine, lysine and histidine in the L-isomer form, or esters, amides or salts thereof, carbohydrate which comprises a monosaccharide (e.g. glucose), a disaccharide (e.g. maltose), starch, dextrin or a mixture thereof, and nutritionally significant quantities of sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, chloride and phosphate ions. The above components may be mixed to form a dry mixture which is dissolved in water prior to use, or they may be added separately to water. The resultant aqueous composition comprises, per litre, at least 3g amino acid, at least 100g carbohydrate, not more than 15 mg. methyl mercaptan, not more than 0.05 g sulphydryl groups, and not more than 1.43g glutamic acid. The composition may comprise zinc, cobalt, manganese, ammonium, sorbate, glycerophosphate, sulphate, acetate, iodide, hydroxide and molybdate ions, alanine, aspartic acid, glycine, glutamine, proline, serine, tyrosine, glucono-delta-lactone, purified safflower oil, ethyl linoleate, polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate, citric acid, flavours and water- and fat-soluble vitamins (examples given) . |
