[Also in Divisions B8 and F2] A safety device for suspending a counterweight 7 balancing a vertically movable machine tool part 1, in the event of failure of a main flexible suspension member 4, comprises an auxiliary flexible suspension member 8 which is connected to the counterweight 7 through a shock absorbing device. The latter comprises a cylinder 11 formed within the weight 7 or in a part secured to the weight, a piston 12 movable in the cylinder and having its rod 13 extending through a cylinder end wall 15 and coupled to the auxiliary member 8, and a pack of spring washers 14 compressible between the piston 12, and wall 15 in the event of the element 8 being loaded. The pack 14 comprising three groups 14a. 14b, 14c of washers, each having a different stiffness, is immersed in a high viscosity damping fluid (e.g. grease), which is expelled from the cylinder 11 by the piston 12 through a calibrated orifice 16 in the wall 15 upon movement of the piston against the pack 14. Movement of the piston-rod 13 relative to the counterweight 7 causes the operation of a micro-switch 18 on the weight 7, which operation actuates a stopping element 20 for the tool part 1 and a warning light 21. The machine tool part 1 is movable vertically along guides on a fixed part 2, by rotation of a lead screw 3. |
