[Also in Division C6] A nutrient medium containing a micro-organism is continuously fermented disposed in at least one moving thin layer and air is passed through the medium and is distributed therein substantially uniformly. Liquid nutrient media may be distributed in thin layers on a series of superposed plates, whereas thin layers of solid or semi-solid media are supported by a fluidised bed arranged in a horizontal plane or distributed on a spiral support mounted in a columnar enclosure. Liquid nutrient medium is fermented in thin layers on plates 2, Fig. 1, as it passes downwardly within the column fermenter 1, and the depth of liquid on the plates can be regulated by adjustable flanges 7 and (where provided) deflectors 8. The plates bear rimmed openings. 3, circular (Fig. 1) or rectangular (Fig. 2) in shape, and covers 4 of which the. lower longitudinal edges adjacent the plates have indentations 5, Fig. 2, so that air, in passing across the column 1 from inlets 11 to outlets 12 and 15, flows through the layers of fermenting liquid. Conduits 9 for heat exchange fluid' may be fitted to the upper or lower surfaces of the plates. Each section has a line 10 for the enrichment of the nutrient medium. |
