An electrode separator is manufactured by punching flat spacers out of plastics sheet and fixing them to a carrier sheet. The plastics material may be polyethylene. The carrier sheet may be semi-permeable, e.g. an ion exchange membrane, paper or a woven or felted fabric. A solvent may be applied to the carrier sheet so that when the spacers are pressed on they soften and stick. Alternatively they may be welded on. Spacers may be applied to both sides of the sheet in corresponding or staggered positions. When they are in staggered positions the carrier sheet is deformed when the spacer is pressed between two electrodes (Fig. 8, not shown). The electrode may also have spacers on it (Fig. 9, not shown). The spacers may be used in an inert zinc-silver cell actuated by adding electrolyte. |
