The invention relates to a liftable and lowerable entrance for vehicles comprising a lifting plate and a sliding plate which can be slid out relative to the latter. The object of designing and arranging the steering linkage and the lifting cylinder in such a manner for operation of the sliding and lifting plate that a reduction in the standing area of the passenger compartment or an impairment of the function due to distortion of the vehicle is ruled out, is achieved by virtue of the fact that on both sides of the lifting plate there is arranged a steering linkage which is operated by a common lifting cylinder.
