摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ECB mode liquid crystal display element which has a wide visual field angle characteristic, improved display quality, and high response speed by arranging a film subjected to an orientation treatment so that liquid crystal molecules are oriented perpendicularly or nearly perpendicularly in the intermediate part between substrates. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element has a liquid crystal cell including a pair of the substrates 1, 2 arranged to face each other apart a prescribed spacing and a liquid crystal layer held between a pair of these substrates 1 and 2. The boundary surfaces of the substrates 1, 2 with the liquid crystal layer are subjected to the orientation treatment in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules are oriented perpendicularly or nearly perpendicularly. A light transparent film 9 arranged in parallel with the surfaces of the substrates 1, 2 is arranged in the intermediate part between a pair of the substrates 1, 2. The liquid crystal layer is divided to the two liquid crystal layers with the film 9 as a boundary. Further, both surfaces of the films 9 are subjected to the orientation treatment in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules are oriented perpendicularly or nearly perpendicularly to the surface of the film 9.
