A centrifugal separator comprising a double-walled rotor (42) rotatable in a housing (11). The housing has an inlet (21) to a gap (90) between the housing and the rotor and an outlet (24) from the gap, axially spaced from the inlet. The rotor has an inlet (92) near the housing inlet (21) for passing fluid into the gap (65) between the double walls of the rotor and an outlet (85) from the rotor gap (65) to the housing gap (90) is located near the housing outlet (24). A first fraction of centrifuged fluid passes from the rotor out of the housing outlet (24) and a second fraction passes from the rotor gap (65) down an axial passage in the rotor. The gaps (65,90) are shaped and arranged to provide a recirculation flow of at least a portion of the fist fraction through the housing gap (90) down towards the housing inlet (21) under a higher impedance than the flow through the rotor gap (65).
