The invention comprises compounds of the formulae wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4/t each represents a hydrogen atom, one or two of the R1-, R2-, R3- and R4-hydrogen atoms being each possibly replaced by a C1- 5 alkyl group and one of the R2- and R3-hydrogen atoms being possibly replaced by the group -COR5, wherein R5 is a hydrogen atom or a possibly halogen-substituted C1- 3 alkyl group, and therapeutically useful salts thereof. The compounds are prepared by nitrating compounds of the formulae and, if desired, reacting the compound thus formed with a base or, if it does not contain an acyl group, with an acid, to produce the corresponding salt. When a compound of the Formulae I, II or III contains an acyl group, this may be split off by hydrolysis. Pharmaceutical compositions, having anti-bacterial activity, comprise a compound of the invention together with a pharmaceutical carrier. The compositions may be in the form of tablets, suspensions and capsules.
