A method of improving the stability to ultraviolet light in the presence of air of a lubricating oil produced by a hydrocracking process, comprises contacting the oil in a treating zone with HF. The contacting step is conventional, e.g. it may comprise a plurality of stages in sequence at temperatures between 0‹ and 250‹ F., and anhydrous HF or an aqueous solution containing at least 90 wt. per cent HF may be used. In illustrated embodiments, a hydrocarbon feed containing a substantial portion boiling above 750‹ F., e.g. lubricating oil stock, crude oils, reduced crudes, residua and deasphalted oils, is catalytically hydrocracked, e.g. in two stages, and a fraction boiling above 600‹ F. is passed to the contacting step. |
