A device for testing bulk tobacco or cigarettes 22 is similar to that described in the parent Specification but the reduction in volume of the tobacco chamber formed by the diaphragm 16 due to an increase in pressure in the chamber 1 causes air to be driven out of the tobacco chamber and to bubble out in a bath 20. The chamber 1 is connected to a pressure meter 9 and a compressed air source 5 via a three way valve 6. As the pressure in the chamber 1 is increased the air surrounding the cigarette is forced into a calibrated tube 18 and bubbles through the bath 20, the level of water in the bath being maintained constant by a reservoir 25. A further increase in the pressure in the chamber 1 causes compression of the cigarette and bubbles again pass through the bath, the pressure at which these bubbles start to appear being recorded. A photo-electric device and a counter records the number of bubbles as the pressure is raised to a final value. The reduction in volume of the cigarette is calculated from the product of the number of bubbles and the volume of a bubble as determined by a suitable calibration of the tube 18. By turning the valve 6 so that the chamber 1 is vertical to the atmosphere through passages 6c, 6e, the cigarette partially returns to its original volume drawing air from the tube 18. The amount that the water rises up the tube gives the change in volume of the cigarette. In a modification the meter 9 is replaced by a moving chart pen recorder, the pen receiving an impulse from the photo-electric cell whenever a bubble is released. |
