A detergent composition contains a foamsuppressing substance encapsulated by an organic material which is temperature-responsive at a suds temperature between 25‹ and 95‹ C. By temperature-responsive is meant that the material sets free the foam-suppressing substance at a certain temperature or temperature range when the encapsulated material or the detergent composition containing it is admixed with water having said temperature or a temperature falling within said range. The capsules preferably have a particle size of less than 2 mm. The encapsulating organic material may be a film-forming hydrophilic colloid material, e.g. gum arabic, gelatin, agar-agar, sodium alginate, casein, albumen, pectins, zein, starch, Irish moss, CMC, polyethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer, polyvinylmethylether. maleic anhydride copolymer, styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer, polyethyleneimine, ozocerite or ceresin wax. The foam-suppressing substance is preferably of the nonionic type, e.g. the condensation products of alkylene oxides with a hydrophobic compound having at least one hydrogen atom capable of reacting with the alkylene oxide. Other foam-suppressing materials employed are glyceride oils, fatty acids or derivatives thereof, silicones, hydrocarbons, higher fatty alcohols, cationic surface-active agents and polyalkylene glycols and ethers thereof. The detergent composition may consist of an active detergent (i.e. ampholytic, anionic, cationic and/or nonionic), builder salts and the usual additives and diluents. The builder salts specified are alkali metal phosphates and polyphosphates, alkali metal salts of E.D.T.A. and N.T.A., and alkali metal silicates and carbonates. Other additives specified are chlorine bleaches, e.g. hypochlorite, trichloroisocyanuric acid, oxygen bleaches, e.g. perborates, sodium sulphate and alkali metal xylene sulphonates. |
