[Also in Division D1] An aqueous print paste comprises a pigment (e.g. iron oxide), and as binder a copolymer dispersion which has been prepared by free-radical copolymerization of:-(a) a monomer containing in the molecule at least one N-methylol group or an N-alkoxymethyl group and from 99-70% by weight [with reference to (a) plus (b)] of (b) a comonomer which does not contain any of the groups specified under (a) in the presence of (c) an organic liquid in which the copolymer formed is substantially insoluble and also in the presence of (d) a copolymer of comonomers of groups (a) and (b) which is soluble in the organic liquid (c). Monomers defined under (a) include the N-methylolamides and N-alkoxymethylamides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, also of crotenic, itaconic, maleic and α-chloroacrylic acids and N-acryloylurea. Comonomers used in (b) may be formed from butadiene, styrene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, and N-vinylpyrrolidine. Organic liquids include benzene, toluene, xylene, terpenes, dionone, tetrahydrofuran, ethylene chloride, acetonitrile, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphonide and gasoline. In examples copolymers of (1) ethyl acrylate and N-methylol-methacrylamide butyl ether, (2) ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and N-methylolmethacrylamide butyl ether copolymer, and (3) vinyl propionate, ethyl acrylate and N-methylolmethactylamide butyl ether are prepared by copolymerization in the presence of a copolymer of styrene, ethylhexyl acrylate, N-vinylimidazole and N-methylol-methacrylamide butyl ether. The compositions may include a crosslinking component, e.g. methylolated diurethane of butanediol. |
