Cosmetic compositions comprise a solution of a water-insoluble cosmetic material in an organic solvent which is water-immiscible and volatile or which is soluble only to a limited extent (up to 20% by weight) in water, the said solution being dispersed in an aqueous phase containing a protective colloid, e.g. a water-soluble or water-dispersible natural or synthetic gum, cellulose derivative or vinyl polymer. The compositions are adapted to be coated on to skin or hair to deposit a thin film of the cosmetic material. Preferred compositions are "barrier creams" comprising esters of polysaccharides, e.g. dextran, almylose and amylopectin with C 10-18 fatty acids. Other suitable cosmetic ingredients include animal, vegetable and mineral fats, oils and waxes, gums, resins and synthetic polymers, e.g. for hair dressings. Germicides, antiinflammatory agents, deodorants, anti-perspirants, sun-screen agents and perfumes may also be present. Suitable organic solvents include benzyl alcohol, 2-ethyl-1, 3-hexane-diol, CHCl 3 , CCl 4 , butanol, diethyl ketone isopropyl acetate and dibutyl carbitol. |
