1,149,140. Carboxylic betaines. TH. GOLDSCHMIDT A.G. 10 Oct., 1967 [15 Oct., 1966] No. 46312/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises novel betaines of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is a C 7-5 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>2</SP> is an ethylene or propylene radical, R<SP>3</SP> is a C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 hydroxyalkyl, a polyethylene glycol radical with up to 4 alkoxy groups or a polypropylene glycol radical with up to 4 alkoxy groups and R<SP>4</SP> is a methylene or ethylene radical. The betaines are prepared by techniques which are known per se. In the examples N,N<SP>1</SP>-di-(capryloylamidoethyl).N,N<SP>1</SP> - dimethyl - ethylenediammonium di - (acetobetaine) is prepared by reacting caprylic acid with tri-ethylenetetramine to give the di-amide which is treated with H.CHO/H.COOH to methylate the secondary amino-groups and this product is then heated with sodium chloroacetate to yield the betaine. The compounds with R<SP>3</SP> = hydroxy alkyl or polyethylene glycol radical are obtained by reacting the diamide with the required amount of ethylene oxide. |
