Naphtholactam is prepd. by a simple process in which phthalic acid, anhydride or phthalimide is catalytically hydrogenated in the presence of NH3, opt. at elevated temp. or pressure. - In an example, phthalic anhydride is treated with a hydrogenation catalyst and conc. NH4OH added in the amt. required for half reaction, the temp. being =0 degree C, and then hydrogenated to half the possible H2 uptake.
