A display device and a controlling method thereof are provided to minimize defects such as linear afterimages, spot defects, and stains caused by sealant in an LCD layer. The display device includes the first substrate(20), a data pattern including a dummy data line formed both edges of the first substrate, a data driver(60), the second substrate(30), the LCD layer(40) placed between the first and second substrate, an outer black matrix(31), and the sealant(70). The data driver applies a data driving signal for making the LCD layer to be oriented in a horizontal direction to the first substrate on the dummy data line. The black matrix is formed along an edge of the second substrate. The sealant combines the first and second substrate with each other along the edge of the first and second substrate. The LCD layer is placed to the inside of a closed space formed by the sealant. The LCD layer adjacent to the sealant is vertically arranged to the first substrate.
