Fumes from a sealed crank-case flow through a combined non-return and manually adjustable metering valve unit 3 and a tube 52, to a chamber 2 where they mix with a portion of the engine exhaust gases, tapped from the exhaust manifold J through a tube 53, in which they are cooled. The resultant mixture from chamber 2 is drawn into the inlet manifold F. The crank-case fumes flow through a frusto-conical tube, Fig. 7 (not shown), located within chamber 2, the spacing between the downstream end of the chamber and the downstream and larger end of the tube being adjustable to provide a means for regulating the proportion of exhaust gases flowing through the chamber. If the pressure in the crank-case exceeds a certain value, fumes pass through a bore Fig. 10 (not shown) in the closure 4 for the engine oil replenishment opening, a non-return valve and a tube 45 to a point downstream of the air filter H. The crank-case fumes may be led to chamber 2 from a plugged opening 16 in the side of closure 4 rather than from the crank-case itself. The respective inlets to the chamber 2 served by tubes 52, 53 may be interchanged. In modifications Figs. 12 and 13 (not shown), chamber 2 is dispensed with, the tubes 52, 53 discharging either directly and separately into the inlet manifold or into two limbs of a T pipe, the third limb discharging into the inlet manifold. |
