In a process for the production of a 1,5- disubstituted 4-cyanopyrazole of the general formula in which X is a (possibly substituted) aliphatic hydrocarbon radical, cycloaliphatic radical, araliphatic radical or (possibly substituted) aryl radical and Y is a (possibly substituted) aryl radical or heterocyclic radical a derivative of a #-ketonitrile of the general formula in which Y has the meaning stated above and R is alkoxy, alkylamino or arylamino is reacted with a monosubstituted hydrazine of the formula or salt thereof in which X has the meaning stated above in the presence of a carboxylic acid at an elevated temperature. The examples describe the preparation of compounds of the first formula above in which the values of X are alkyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl, phenyl substituted with Br, Cl, F, CF 3 , NO 2 and SO 2 N(CH 3 ) 2 , benzyl, cyano- and hydroxy-ethyl and the values of Y are phenyl, phenyl substituted with Cl, CH 3 and CH 3 O and furyl. |
