An enclosed base 42, Fig. 4, is formed in a metallic member 2011 by relative movement between a plasma arc torch 22 and the member 2011 to produce partial penetration of the member 20<SP>11</SP>, the action of the torch being such that the plasma gas maintains an open bore 42 while the fused metal solidifies to enclose the bore 42. The metal is titanium alloy. The torch comprises a water-cooled constricting nozzle 8, Fig. 2, surrounding a tungsten electrode 2. Argon or an argon-helium mixture is passed through the nozzle 8. Argon is also fed through an outer nozzle 12 having a porous member 14 producing laminar flow. |
