1,112,163. Chuck. N. A. WOODWORTH CO. 18 Nov., 1965 [7 Jan., 1965], No. 49050/65. Headings B3B and B3T. A chuck comprises two sets of axially spaced jaws 93, 96 movable to-and-from the axis by an actuator 29 connected to the jaws to allow of unequal movement should the surface of the workpiece be uneven and to allow the workpiece 6 to be held with equal force in each plane. The actuator 29 is secured to a draw-bar by a screw 37 and moves in a lubricant chamber 19. The work 130 is located against a series of bolt-heads or a stop 43, which also acts as a driver. Each jaw has two work-engaging pads 128 and can pivot on a cranked arm 86 or 87 mounted by a ball-joint 88 or 90 and connected to the actuator 29 by a ball-joint 80 or 79 and a recessed plate 73 or 74 held by a flexible band 78 against a pair of triangular wedges 61, the wedges seating on a hexagonal portion 57 of the actuator. The flexible band and the wedges 61 permit differential movement of the plates 73, 74 to allow for unequal movements of the jaws. In a modification, the plates 73, 74 are slidably tongued to one another. In a further modification, the plates are loosely bolted together and are connected by toggle-links to the jaw-arms. |
