Molten metal is atomised by pouring it between rapidly rotating (5000 rev/min) rolls (200 mm dia) set very close together. The atomised particles collect in the gap between a further pair of rolls through which they are rolled to produce thin strip. The build up of a trough of molten metal between the first pair of rolls ensures even spread of the atomised particles also assisted by a curtain of inert gas such as nitrogen. The rolls may be metal and water cooled, or heat-resisting porous material, cooled by passing a fluid or gas from.
|
