A computer-controlled communication switching system (VST) is connected to a traffic simulation device (VSE) and to a personal computer (PC) which, in turn, is connected to the device (VSE). Setting instructions (E1, E2) which place the operational state of the system (VST) into a defined state are supplied to the system (VST) from the personal computer (PC). Triggered by checking instructions (Ü1, Ü2) triggered by the personal computer (PC), the device (VSE) selectively checks those characteristics of the system (VST) which are first established by the setting instructions (E1, E2). After the checking instructions (Ü1, Ü2) have been executed, the device (VSE) forms information items (I1, I2) describing the actual state of the system (VST) and supplies these to the personal computer (PC). The latter checks the actual-state information items (I1, I2) against predetermined nominal-state information items (S1, S2). <IMAGE>
