PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nonwoven fabric readily producible in spite of a decorated portion comprising each clearly, well defined and three-dimensionally stable raised portion possessed thereby. SOLUTION: This nonwoven fabric 100 has a fibrous background portion 12 and a raised fibrous portion 16 respectively in a tricot-like pattern and the raised fibrous portion 16 is joined through a fibrous transition region 24 extending in the machine direction or a fibrous transition region 22 extending in the direction intersecting the machine direction at right angles to the fibrous background portion 12. The transition regions 24 and 22 respectively comprise fiber-poor regions 30 and 27 and fiber-rich regions 32 and 28. Two types of an intaglio type in which the basis weight (weight of unit area) and the density of the raised fibrous portion 16 is substantially the same as those of the fibrous background portion 12 and a slub type in which the basis weight of the raised fibrous portion 16 is greater than that of the fibrous background portion 12 are cited as the form of the raised fibrous portion 16. The nonwoven fabric 100 can be produced by placing a fiber layer or a lightly entangled web on a microapertured supporting member having the top surface with a foraminous pattern and a second surface different in height from the top surface and applying a fluid pressure in the form of a water stream to the top surface of the fiber layer.
