Generally novel compounds of formula where R 1 and R 2 are H, C 1-18 alkyl, C 5-7 cycloalkyl, aryl with 6 or 10 ring carbons optionally substituted with halogen, C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-8 alkoxy, or a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic group containing at least one N or O hetero atom and optionally substituted with NO 2 , C 1-4 alkyl or C 1-4 alkoxy, or R 1 and R 2 together with the carbon to which they are attached form a 5-7 membered alicyclic ring optionally substituted with C 1-4 alkyl, C 5-7 cycloalkyl or C 5-7 cycloalkylidene, or form a group where R 5 and R 6 are C 1-16 alkyl and Y is H or O (free radical); R 3 and R 4 are as for R 1 and R 2 , but not more than one of R 1 to R 4 is H, are prepared from R 1 R 2 C(NH) 2 CN and R 3 R 4 C = O, either directly in the presence of a basic catalyst or by first forming the Schiff's base and then reacting this with a basic catalyst. The Schiff's base 4-benzylideneamino-4- cyano - 2,2,6,6 - tetramethylpiperidine - 1 - oxyl is pepared from benzaldehyde and 4- amino - 4 - cyano - 2,2,6,6 - tetramethylpiperidine - 1 - oxyl. |
