1-Olefinic monomers may be homo- or copolymerized under low pressure conditions using a catalyst consisting essentially of 3TiCl3.AlCl3 mixed with substantially dry calcium oxide, and an aluminium alkyl halide. The polymerization may be effected at from 70 DEG to 150 DEG F. Examples relate to polymerization of propylene, random copolymerization of propylene and ethylene, and block copolymerization of propylene and ethylene, using a catalyst containing 3TiCl3.AlCl3, calcium oxide and diethylaluminium chloride. There is general reference to polymerization of propylene with a C4 to C12 1-olefin or any mixture thereof.ALSO:A polymerisation catalyst consists essentially of 3TiCl3. AlCl3 mixed with substantially dry calcium oxide, and an aluminium alkyl halide. From 0.005 to 2.0 parts by weight calcium oxide may be mixed with 1 part by weight 3Ti Cl3.AlCl3, and the mole ratio of 3TiCl3.AlCl3: aluminium alkyl halide: calcium oxide, may be 2 8:1:0.6. The aluminium alkyl halide may be diethyl aluminium chloride, diisopropyl aluminium chloride, dimethyl aluminium bromide, diisohexyl aluminium chloride, diethyl aluminium iodide and octyl aluminium dichloride. In the Example, 3TiCl3. AlCl3 and calcium oxide are dry mixed in an inert atmosphere and the blend mixed with a cyclohexane solution of diethyl aluminium chloride. |
