In a collapsible steering column for a motor vehicle, upper and lower steering shaft parts 21, 30 are connected to telescope under a predetermined axial impact load, and a bracket attachable to the vehicle so supports the upper shaft part 21 as to impart a desired resistance to sliding of the upper shaft part relative to the bracket when the shaft parts telescope. The lower shaft part 30 is a hexagonal rod which extends with a small surrounding space into the hexagonal of a tube forming the upper part 21. A plastics filling in the space and in a transverse passage 31 forms a shear pin 33 connecting the shaft parts 21, 30. The upper shaft part 21 is journalled by bearings 19, 20 in a jacket tube 14 carried by the bracket 10. Progressive resistance to movement of the jacket tube 14 through the bracket 10 is provided by pins 50 carried by the bracket and arranged to enlarge preformed grooves in the jacket tube as the tube slides through the bracket. A ring 40 on the jacket tube 14 prevents upward displacement of the tube relative to the bracket 10, and a stop 43 on the upper shaft part 21 prevents upward displacement of the upper shaft part relative to the jacket tube. |
