PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals in high yield and purity, suppressing side-reactions, by reacting benzaldehydes with mercaptides in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II can be produced by reacting benzaldehydes of formula I (X is halogen) with mercaptides of formula MS-R (R is alkyl; M is alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal). The reaction is carried out in a halogenated hydrocarbon solvent (e.g. chlorobenzene) in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst (e.g. tetrabutylammonium bromide) at 20-100 deg.C for 1-5hr. The amounts of the catalyst and the mercaptides are 1-50mol.% and 1.0-1.2 times equivalent based on the compound of formula I, respectively. |
