摘要 PURPOSE: To efficiently obtain a high yield of a particulate high-molecular weight polyphenylene sulfide in a short time. CONSTITUTION: A process for producing a polyphenylene sulfide by reacting an alkali metal sulfide with a dihalo aromatic compound in an organic amide solvent, which comprises the step 1 of reacting an alkali metal sulfide with a dihalo aromatic compound in an organic amide solvent containing water in an amount of 0.5-2.0mol per mol of the alkali metal sulfide at 170-270 deg.C while raising temperature at a temperature rise rate of 0.1-1 deg.C/min on average at least from 220 deg.C to 240 deg.C to give a conversion of the dihalo aromatic compound of 70-98mol% and the step 2 of adding water at a temperature of at least 235 deg.C to the reaction system so as to give a state in which water is present in an amount of 2.1-10mol per mol of the alkali metal sulfide and effect conversion into a high-molecular polyphenylene sulfide within a temperature range from 245 to 290 deg.C.
