Unsaturated polymerized hydrocarbons of molecular weight 1000 to 1,000,000 prepared by catalytic polymerization of diolefins or copolymerization of mono-olefins with diolefins or copolymerization of different diolefins with one another in inert solvents wherein after the polymerization is over or after the desired conversion has been achieved at least two reaction mixtures are mixed and then reacted with a catalyst system which consists of the following components (a) and (b):-(a) one or more compounds of general formula R 7 MeX y-n , where Me is boron, aluminium, gallium, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, silicon, tin, arsenic, antimony, titanium, zirconium, phosphorus, molybdenum, tungsten, bismuth, iron, mercury, cadmium, vanadium, uranium, or vanadyl, X is fluorine, chlorine, bromine or iodine; R is hydrogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkoxy or sulphoxy or a carboxylate anion, y is the valency of the metal atom Me and n is from 0 to the valency of Me; and (b) one or more compounds containing active hydrogen, the catalyst component (a) being added in a concentration of 0À01 to 10% on the polymer used and the catalyst component (b) being added in an amount of 0À002 to 2 moles per mole of component (a). The component (a) may be added first followed by addition of component (b) all at once or in portions. The polymerized hydrocarbon may be polybutadiene, polyisoprene, copolymers of butadiene or isoprene with mono-olefins, e.g. styrene, ethylene-propylene copolymers and ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene terpolymers. Active hydrogen containing compounds are water, alcohols, mercaptans, inorganic and organic acids, phenols, thiophenols, enolizable carbonyl compounds and imides. In examples mixtures of polybutadiene and polyisoprene are treated. |
