PURPOSE: To improve a user's operating convenience in a VTR equipped with a connecting terminal to a pay decoder. CONSTITUTION: A bit stream detection circuit 5 which detects the existence of a connection at a bit stream terminal is installed, and a control signal 14 which is operated at a time when a bit stream signal 10 is connected, is fetched into a control circuit 6. When it is judged that the bit stream signal 10 has been connected, a video and sound changeover switch 7 is changed over to the side of a pay decoder 2.
