The generator for a compander has a first capacitors charged and discharged via different circuits. The second capacitor is connected to alter the generator's time constant when the voltage across the first capacitor exceeds a given limit. The charging current for the second capacitor assumes a first value when the voltage across the first capacitor is below the given limit and adopts a second value above this limit. The first or the second value may be proportional to the voltage across the first capacitor up to a limit.
