The invention relates to a method where water together with a top layer of oil to be removed is led from a backwater point along a channel (6) to an oil collecting means (7) and purified water is discharged, the backwater pressure forcing the oil layer to a point of entry (5). The movement of the oil layer is promoted by enhancing the flow of water in the channel (6, 8) by using an oil collecting device (7) which has a water pumping action and/or by arranging for a relatively lower pressure level at the point of discharge (9) of purified water in relation to the surrounding water level and/or by leading the water to such a point. The invention is also directed to the oil removal arrangement to be used on board a vessel or correspondingly in running water which arrangement consists of an entry (5) at a backwater point and an entry channel (6) leading from said entry to a collecting device (7) as well as a discharge channel (8) for returning purified water. Said collecting means (7) is designed in such a way that when operating as a removing device it will also pump surface water from the point of entry (5) towards itself.
