<p>An engine management system is described which uses as a control parameter a signal which quantitatively represents the value of the pressure within a cylinder averaged over a combustion cycle. The signal representing the mean cylinder pressure is obtained preferably by sampling and averaging the pressure only during a short period straddling top dead center on the compression stroke, thus permitting a mean cylinder pressure signal to be achieved in real time.</p> |
