[Also in Divisions A3, A5, C3 and D2] Cellulose pulp which has been cross-linked with a polyfunctional cross-linking agent (as defined in the Specification) in the presence of an aqueous solution of up to 2À1% of an alkaline catalyst such that the factor "R18" (as defined in the Specification) is increased by 1-16%, may be used in the production of laminated products. The factor R18 is a measurement of the resistance to 18% aq. NaOH at 20‹ C. In examples: (16) a baby's napkin comprises a dried layer of a defibred pulp prepared as above surrounded by a thin coating of cellulose wadding, and above this a thin layer of non- woven fibrillated rayon fibre; (17) a compress for bandaging comprises a dried defibred pulp layer prepared as above compressed at 2 kg./ cm.<SP>2</SP> and enclosed in a thin layer of non-woven fibrillated rayon fibre; (18) a dental pad for absorbing saliva is of similar construction to the compress; (19) a sanitary towel comprises two layers of dried pulp prepared as above enclosed in a thin layer of tissue paper, the outer surface of one pulp layer being provided with a thin plastic sheet located outside the tissue paper. The two pulp layers are held together by a casing of two-ply tissue paper, the whole being enclosed in a net-covered casing of cotton wool. |
